I remember when this hotel opened a few years ago and I instantly fell in love with their sun terrace and would often drop by for coffee or hot chocolate simply enjoying the central location with the village and surrounding mountains.
Just after Christmas having stuffed ourselves silly in one of the mountain lodges and heading back for a coffee at one of the patisserie cafes, we decided that the sun terrace at the Am Reiterkogel looked so sunny and bubbly that we would stop have espressos there.
I am so glad we did as though there wasn’t the slightest bit of pressure, we were a large group that only wanted soft drinks, the waitress suggested we have a Kaiserschmarrn which I love and which she waxed lyrical about that it was the best in the valley.
More out of politeness and with a bit of scepticism on my part as I really know my kaiserschmarrn , a wonderful chopped up fluffy pancake, we ordered it and an apple strudel to share.
I have to confess it was sensational. Warm fluffy gorgeously presented it was absolutely delicious as was the apple strudel.
Bearing this in mind we decided to go and have lunch there. Now their dinner menu looked really tempting but alas is not served at lunch. Hinterglemm is a ski resort and most people go and lunch up in the lodges in the mountains so lunch time in the restaurants tend to have limited menus, the usual schnitzel spaghetti ,burger , salad and soup.
As it as a really snowy day we sat inside the restaurant bar which was surprisingly full. It’s a modern typical of the area, wooden tables cushions grey and purple clean lines and had a nice chilled vibe.
The lunch menu had very limited choices for a vegetarian basically soup or spaghetti with tomatoes sauce which was over cooked and bland. The pumpkin soup with coconut was too sweet for my liking but unusually it had a spring roll in it which was good. My tomato soup was delicious as was my ‘mini’ steak sandwich with fries and salad. The fillet was a generous portion and the fries where real chips and large side salad. I have to say I enjoyed it and I though the service efficient friendly but just as important, the atmosphere was nice. To me its not just about the meal but about the whole experience.
